Lucy Wayt

About

Lucy is an illustrator and graphic designer based in the North East of the U.K. Her work mainly consists of a distinctive black, greyscale and pink colour palette that goes alongside pop culture and/or NSFW imagery. This work is done in a tasteful way, she likes to create work that may have some taboo topics but also looks at body shape and individuality. Alongside this, Lucy is also very passionate about political topics including but not limited to feminism, LGBTQ+ rights, mental health awareness, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the battle to stop prejudice against sex workers. She likes to include references to these throughout her work with the hope that this can help make even the smallest change.

Lucy Wayt is a skilled illustrator, working with mainly digital methods but can also work well with analogue techniques. Lucy is graduating with a BA (hons) Graphic Design qualification and has a huge passion for illustration and design as a whole. Lucy has a broad portfolio of illustration as well as graphic design projects, highlighting her interest in image making, editorial and layout design and mixed media pieces. Her main interest is using current events and pop culture references throughout her work and thoroughly believes art can be a form of peaceful protest.

While studying at The Northern School of Art, Lucy has also completed several personal projects and pieces. This includes, creating both commissioned and self-initiated briefs. Some of these commissioned pieces have been tattoo designs to branding for small companies.

Lucy has always had a passion for art and knew from a young age she wanted to work within the art and design industry. However, she wasn’t quite sure what sector she wanted to work within and has worked her way through a number of different medias including painting, collage, cut paper/ stencilling, typography and editorial before deciding that illustration was her strong point.

Throughout these past three years, Lucy has strongly developed her illustrative style as well as learning vital graphic design skills which can be used alongside her image making pieces. Now graduated, she plans to follow what her mum has always told her, which is to pursue her dreams. Her plan is to move to Liverpool and work on getting an apprenticeship to become a tattoo artist.

Lucy’s FMP work focussed on the topic of nostalgia, what it was like being born between the years 1998 and 2000. Which was that awkward stage where you feel like you don’t really fit into your assigned generation. This was the most challenging module yet for Lucy as she wanted to show off her both her graphic and illustration skills and to do this, she really had to step out of her comfort zone. Using old photographs from participants, Lucy created pieces based on their childhoods using illustrative abstract representation of the participants favourite childhood characters and brands.

During her FMP as well as the end of her second year, Lucy started to create and adapt her own visual identity and style within her illustration and graphic design work. Lucy’s work mainly consists of a distinctive black, greyscale and pink colour palette that goes alongside pop culture and/or NSFW imagery.
